About Velumia

Like a lot of couples, our trips to the beauty counter were mostly hers. She would browse, and I would walk behind her holding the basket. Almost everything in it was for her. One thing was for both of us. The moisturizer. It is the single product the two of us reach for every day, and it was the one we could never quite settle on.

So we went looking for the one we could stop looking for. We tried what was recommended and what was praised. A few stung when she tried them. One we truly liked, until the shelf it lived on was cleared and it was gone. Most were simply fine. What we wanted was not complicated: ingredients we could actually see, a texture we enjoyed, and a finish we both looked forward to, a soft matte, never greasy.

We also wanted to see what was inside, and how much of it, rather than take the front of the box on faith. That mattered to us as people long before it was ever a way to make a cream.

We knew how it might look. One more unknown name, one more cream, asking you to believe it. We had stood on your side of that, wanting more than a promise on the front of the box. So we set out to make the one we would have believed, and to put what is inside where you could see it.

We are not chemists, and we never pretended to be. We chose a manufacturer, sat down with their formulator, and brought the one thing most people do not walk in with: an exact idea of what we wanted, and what we would not accept. The science of which actives, and how they hold together, came from people who have done this for years, and we are glad it did. The standard came from us.

Early on, we talked through where the active levels should land. There are sound reasons a formulator weighs to bring some of them down, cost, stability, how a formula wears, and our team laid those out honestly. We understood the case. But we kept coming back to one thing: if we were going to show people exactly what was inside, and how much, then the how much had to be a number we believed in. So together we found the levels we could stand behind and disclose without hesitation. That decision is why the use levels we will publish are ones we are proud to show.

We tried things that did not survive their own results. A few sensorial touches we liked were added, sampled, and taken back out when the feedback did not support them. Four revisions in all, three of them sampled. We kept sending it back until nothing in it was there for show.

The third sample arrived while she was home alone. She opened it before I got back, and her first thought, just looking at it, was oh my. She tried it. The feel confirmed what the look had promised, and the scent was its own, different from every sample before it, and right. Then she did something we are still a little proud of. She said nothing. She put it down and waited, because she wanted to know whether the same thing would happen to someone who walked in with no idea what she had just felt. When I came home and opened it, it did. We had each, on our own, found the one we had been looking for.

We made one cream, and we made it carefully. If we ever make another, it will have to earn its place the same way. Considered, disclosed, and worth the space it takes.
